Truly exceptional !
Herriot is a truly exceptional author, and in my opinion every animal lover in Britain should read his works. This is another wonderful collection of stories, this time every chapter featuring dogs. Some are laugh-out-loud amusing, others bring tears to your eyes, but all are can't-put-down readable. My only criticism of this particular book is that most of the tales have been taken from his other books, so if you already own his complete collection, you might not want to invest in these duplicates. Having said that, there are one or two additional stories, and he does add a page or two at the end of every chapter telling you a little bit more about the characters. I personally own every book he's ever written, both in paperback and Kindle form, and I wasn't going to miss out on this one - and I'm very glad I didn't. Even if the stories are duplicates, they're well-worth a second read. And if you're lucky enough not to have read any Herriot stories yet, why not make this your first - you'll find yourself well and truly addicted!

fantastic read
The very best from James Herriot. Nobody tells it like he does. I could read his books over and over again and he just makes me laugh and cry with his vivid animal stories. Being a farmer's daughter in Lancashire and also having veterinary nurse experience, these books are the very best in entertainment and so realistic. Vividly portrayed situations told with humour and true compassion.

It kept me interested
I am not a big reader in fact the number of books that I have reached the end is we shall say is few. I was soon turning the pages with this one- my wife sent for it to keep me occupied while I had a few spare moments on holiday. I usually fall asleep and drop the book but this one is different- you seem to get involved,, The short stories make my sort of reading relatively easy and enjoyable...

For the love of dogs
Some great stories of dogs & their owners. Some happy, some sad. As having watched All creatures great & small over the years, couldn't resist this book. When reading about an unwell dog it makes me think of my two Labradors, how I love them, how I'd feel if they were ill. A must for all dog lovers.

A very entertaining book about vet's life in times gone by.
I find James Herriot books are always enjoyable to read even more than once. The stories are of times gone by and mostly happy and amusing.

A treasure trove of nostalgia.
Absolutely love it. So much so I’ve bought copies for friends. Wonderfully nostalgic. I remember some of the stories and there are lots I don’t recall. The introduction alone by James Herriot is with the money and there’s additions after each story which give perspective and hindsight.
