## Questions & Answers

**Q: what is the difference between this and Cold Steels Boar Spear?**
A: Bear with me this is going to be long to delineate the differences between the winged spear and the boar spear. Functionally they are both a winged spear preventing whatever you have stabbed from running down the spear blade and then down the shaft and ultimately ruining your day in the process. Both come on a heavy duty wooden shaft Both have wings and both wind up being 89" overall and that's where the similarities end. The winged spear utilizes a 65" Ash wood handle and has a 24" spear point and socket. (17" Blade 6" socket) The boar spear utilizes a 71" Ash wood handle leaving it with a 18" Spear point and socket. (9" blade and 9" socket.)The Boar spear because of the placement of the lugs allows for full 18" both up the blade and then up the socket before the lugs engage and stop penetration. the winged spear has it's lugs closer to blade stopping penetration at about 17" and preventing penetration up the socket. The boar spear has a head weight of 20 oz compared to the lugged spear's head weight of 34 oz. this additional weight allows the Wing spear to have a longer and a wider blade profile whereas the blade is shorter and narrower on the boar spear and this is why both spears appear to have the same blade geometry. So in the end the boar spear has a 1" longer penetration than the Wing spear (18" vs 17") and the wing spear will cut a wider path by about 1" Both spears will benefit though from taking the shaft provided by cold steel, and tossing it out and substituting in it's place either a 65" or 71" bo Staff made from oak, it will be just as strong while being a smaller diameter and lighter. you will have to fit it to your socket bit if you look at how cold steel does theirs you find that you can use a file or a plane, to cut in the taper and get a much stronger wood to socket connection. Use wise the Boar spear is a dedicated boar hunting implement developed out of the middle ages and boar hunting only as the the blade is too narrow to be considered for bear it is designed for stabbing and pinning. The winged spear, is a dark-ages and earlier design that can be used multi-purpose, boar hunting, bear hunting (you need a longer shaft for this), and of course war due to it's blade length it can be used in a slashing fashion for stabbing and pinning and if you have sufficient body strength as a throwing weapon also if it's removed from the shaft it can be used a a very large knife by holding it on the socket. and the lugs will prevent injury to the hand if your hand should slip. The boar spear well you takes your chances. and to quote Forrest Gump: And that's about all I have to say about that.

**Q: How long is the blade portion of the head?**
A: From the tip to the widest portion of the blade: 12-3/4 inchesFrom the tip to the base of the blade where it tapers back to the shaft: 14 inchesFrom the tip to the leading edge of the wings: 15 inchesBlade width is 2-5/8 inches at the widest point

**Q: Does this come with a sheath/cover for the blade?**
A: It does not come with any cover for the blade.

**Q: what diameter is the shaft?**
A: The diameter on the shaft of the wing tipped spear is 1 and a half inches. It is thick and hefty, compared to the 1 and 1/8 inch on the European spear and the lance tipped spear. With the heavy weight of the spearhead, I'm glad it's as thick as it is. On another note. It is listed as 89 inches, mine was 88 inches assembled. If that matters at all.

    Awesome!

Very substantial spear. The package arrived and as most have noted there is no hardware to attach the head to the shaft. Buying the wood screws needed is no big deal and honestly I may not have needed them as after test fitting I need a 4lb sledge to get the head off the shaft...The blade seems solid and well made, come with a slight edge, not sharp enough to really slice like a sharp knife but if you consider that it is meant to be a thrusting tool it has a point that will punch through a lot and not break off, the spin on the head is THINK and runs all the way to the point. While the blued finish looks great, I would honestly rather have bare metal with a slight polish, but oh well. The shaft is straight and very solid, I think that a taper on both ends might be a better design allowing for a butt cap, but I will leave that to a future project.Overall I am pretty impressed and hope to never be on the wrong end of this thing!

unlike some of Cold Steel's other spears that wrap around the shaft like a shovel or rake and look nice only from ...

This spear is a beast! The most important thing to note is that the spear head is a solid piece, unlike some of Cold Steel's other spears that wrap around the shaft like a shovel or rake and look nice only from one side. The blackened finish is also nicer than expected, I thought it was painted black but thankfully it's not. It isn't overly sharp but given the mass this thing would have no trouble poking through a zombie or two. The spear head fits the shaft like a glove which is surprising as well since every other axe handle I have bought from Cold Steel needed serious work (see my other reviews). I am not overly happy with the finish colour of the shaft though...it is dark brown but has a hint of purple to it...yuck. Also the packaging is kind of idiotic, the box with the spear head is taped directly to the shaft with packaging tape so there is gross sticky tape residue all over the shaft that you have to waste time cleaning. I also wish it included a sheath because you do not want poking someone by accident.

Too large for all but the stoutest person.

*by I***G on Reviewed in the United States on 25 November 2019*

Far too massive and thick for practical use. You could use this to hunt with as its proportioned like the Boar Spear. Big,thick and heavy. However for back up use as protection in wilderness survival it would not be as practical as other cold steel spears like the long shaft Assegai or the European spear. It does look like it when last a long time however.
