desertcart.com: Gate : GATE: Movies & TV

Review: Gate is more than it appears to be. - On the surface Gate appears to be another isekai (different world) power fantasy anime where a modern army decimates a medieval army but battles are only a small fraction of what Gate offers. The main protagonist is an otaku like most main characters of this genre, being an anime fan isn't the main focus of Yoji Itami. In fact he is a rather competent military officer, albeit a somewhat unwilling one. After Tokyo thwarted an attack of a fantasy army sent by an overly ambitious emperor - the Japanese Army (JSDF) tasks Itami to spearhead recon operations having received reports of his heroics and quick thinking during the attack. (It was actually his day off and his plans to attend a comic convention were ruined lol.) Yes there are some hilariously one sided battles between modern military with guns vs medieval army wielding nothing more than bows and spears - but much of the show is about establishing relations with the locals and learning about the culture, economy, resources, etc about this strange land (pretty much standard fantasy fare: magic, dragons, elves, etc). Unfortunately the ruling imperial monarchy is not very wise (as evidenced by their attempt to conquer our world) and makes things difficult but their unpopularity makes it easy for the JSDF to win the favor of the locals as they help them with several problems and even establish a new city of trade and commerce between our worlds. On top of all this Itami also has the burden of dealing with our politicians back home (the UN) and taking care of all the friends he makes during his adventures. Strong recommendation!
Review: I love this series - Is it the best quality, most unique story line out there? Maybe not, but it is at times funny, and at other times serious, when it needs be. Japan is momentarily caught with its pants down when a portal appears in what I think is Tokyo. And through this portal, or gate, (hence the name) comes an army of creatures from another dimension. Unbeknownst to them though, they are pushed back by modern weapons. To keep any more attacks taking them by surprise they send a scouting party through the gate to secure it on the other side. In the course of a few episodes, they fight a red dragon, rescue an elven girl, take on a mage apprentice and a priestess of death that's over 900 years old but looks like a Lolita! It is a very pro-military show and while the forces are supposed to be Japanese, you can see a lot of American weapons and tactical influences. There are some moral decisions that individuals have to make between doing the diplomatic thing and doing the right thing.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Story and characters are outstanding - extremely better than title and synopsis suggest
*by A***0 on September 9, 2019*

Like most Japanese anime on blu-ray the video and audio quality are so much better than what you get from streaming services. The upscaling and color on a 4K OLED TV is outstanding. One nice aspect of the story is that it is written somewhat realistically in how the Japanese SDF would actually react to the scenario of a gate linking our world to a world of dragons, elves, sorcerers, etc. Even the political actions of the USA, Russia, and China towards Japan and its visitors are what you would expect from them. 😀 The character development, personalities of the main characters, the references to well known classic films, unfolding relationships between characters, the dialog (Japanese) that doesn't resort to dumbed down 4-letter words are fantastic. The story has gems scattered throughout with respect to humor, characters, and surprises. The politics controlling how the JSDF conduct operations in the world on the other side of the gate and how exceptions are made come right out of the history books. This is a wonderful anime series with a satisfying ending.
