You can use one side of the base to measure 1/4 inch from a surface. The other side is 3/8th inch. Blade is about 1/16th in thick. **Q: Is the black case and pencil shown in the photo included?** A: It was in mine. **Q: The holes for layout lines seem large for a mechanical pencil, could the pencil tip move one side to the other and reduce accuracy?** A: It would be possible for it to move, but I have never had an issue. **Q: where are these made? US?** A: Unfortunately made in China. As far as I know, Woodpecker tools are one of the only to manufacture tools like this in the US. I hate it but most times we have no choice when on a tight budget. ## Customer Reviews ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ These are my favorite measuring devices now *by B***E on May 28, 2025* I do armature wood working. I have a regular speed square but it's really just for rough work; these are much more precise. I like being able to get an exact measurement from the edge of a piece every time, and strike a perfectly 90 degree line.I chose these bench squares over the layout squares because these allow you to transfer a co-planar mark from the face onto the side of a board, which I find myself needing to do frequently. I also like that the 3/8" shoulder allows me to easily find the center of a 3/4" board. Having the lateral measurements along the bottom cutout are also handy and often prevents me from having to switch to a different measuring tool.There are times with having more than 7" of span would be nice, like you would get with the layout squares, but it's rare that I need that and I have other rulers I can switch to when it comes up. I thought the larger 7" square would be the one I would use the most, but now that I've had them for a few months I find myself grabbing the smaller 4" one most often. Turns out most fine measurements are under 4 inches. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Precise *by C***N on April 30, 2025* I love these squares I use them at work every single day as a carpenter and they’re more precise than others because they use 32nds instead of just 1/4 inch marks ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ This may be my favorite tool for woodworking *by J***D on August 13, 2024* This is the perfect size for a quick check of squareness - parts, blades, bits - whatever, and the pencil holes at 1/16" increments make it easy to lay out fastener locations and cut lines with unimaginable precision. The offset base makes it easy to find centerlines in common wood thicknesses. Slip it under a measuring tape to mark square cut lines for longer cuts. Larger squares might be better for larger parts, but they won't be as readily available as having this already tucked in your pocket. The markings are sharp, precise, and highly readable in varying lighting conditions. I use it with a carbide scribe to lay out metal work.
