Living in an apartment, playing the real thing is basically not an option. So, my first solution to that problem was to grab an Aerophone AE-10, not only to keep my fingers loose but also out of curiosity for the additional sounds. (The YDS did not exist at that time). The Aerophone is superior when it comes to additional sounds, but it lacks a decent sax sound, and while the fingerings translate decently well, it's clearly just pressing buttons rather than trying to emulate the real thing. And that's perfectly fine, but I picked up the YDS-120 for two reasons: the more realistic feeling and the sax sounds. It's not perfect, of course. The sounds are clearly fake, especially through the sub-par built in speaker. You will want headphones or an amp if you care about sound quality. But the feel is so much better than the Aerophone in terms of mimicking a real sax. It still does feel like a fancy expensive toy, but for me, it's a joy to use and fits my needs quite well. I don't feel the need to obtain any more digital saxes after these two: the Aerophone is the superior wind controller, while the YDS does a better job at emulating the sax feel, which would make it a better practice tool and is what I grab when I want to play music specifically written for sax. Other thoughts: I would have liked it to come with a case, but I found one on desertcart by a third party that works fine. It won't replace a real sax at any serious gigs unless you're going for a digital sound - which can totally work in plenty of scenarios. I'd say give it a shot if you want a quiet practice tool. He can practice as often as he wants with headphones without bothering his siblings. He also seems to enjoy the different voices.
