If the code is written that uses special functions unique to that optical drive that no other optical drive uses (non-standard), it may not function if going over USB. This is very rare. No one in the right mind will use non-standard functions. Very stylish too, it's made of a nice metallic finish so it's a solid quality product. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Perfect solution for reusing an old optical drive on a new PC (apart from the plug) *by G***K on 29 December 2025* Great piece of kit. If you have a suitable optical drive (I had one reclaimed from an old PC), installation is a doddle, and this enclosure is nicely built and works perfectly (on Windows 11 in my case). My main reason for wanting it is to still be able to rip CDs on my new optical drive-less PC, and it works exactly as I expected/hoped. My old drive still rips at high speed (I watched it go up to 37x in my first test). DVDs and Blu-rays play fine with a standard player app. The enclosure comes with USB3.0 cable, screws and screwdriver to secure the drive, and rubber feet. The only frustration is that it comes with a US plug, so you'll need a UK-US plug adapter.
