Shirai-sensei's suspenseful tale of these intelligent, happy children seemingly growing up in an orphanage surrounded with love from each other and from "Mama", their caregiver -- and then the REAL story of who and where they are -- is thrilling, exciting, hopeful, empowering, disheartening, disturbing, saddening, and everything else you could hope for in a good story. The amount of small clues that are scattered throughout Volume 1 that I picked up on this time around blew my mind. It is clear from the start Neverland had a clear story in mind and a detailed plot laid out from the very beginning. And it's definitely worth a second read through to pick up on the smaller details. The Promised Neverland is an unusual shonen series as it it is far more horror and psychological orintatined then what is typical of a the Shonen Jump magazine. I won't spoil anything but I say that the series earns it's older teen rating and is not for those who are easily frightened. The protagonist Emma, Ray and Norman have a very fun dynamic to their friendship with each having very distinct personalities. Personally Emma is my favorite as she is so true to her core values despite the scrappy hand of cards life had dealt her.
