## Description

Modern Ruin is the latest chapter of Covenant's epic adventure in time and space. Ever a band that's consistently made references to being in motion, physical and mental travel, exploration of the hidden and the unknown. And again they have wondrous tales to tell us. Imagine a broken escalator coming up through the underbrush of a forest, stretching towards the treetops, no second floor left to receive its long-gone passengers. In the background, among the trees, you can make out the steel skeleton of what was once a great building, perhaps the transit hall of an airport. Once this was a busy hub filled with people going places. Now Mother Nature is recycling the remains, in her infinitely slow but irresistible way. What happened here' How did it happen' Or, perhaps, could it be that nothing ever did happen the way it was intended to' Those are among the questions asked by Covenant on their seventh studio album Modern Ruin. A title that implies a whole range of possible scenarios: a romantic lament over an epoch of optimism; a sense of imminent doom; futuristic archaeology; a cheeky comment on the state of the modern world... What does the band think' They won't tell. So we're left to explore for ourselves and there is a lot to discover among the ruins. As you travel through the ever-changing soundscapes of Modern Ruin you get pummeled by frantic beats, lured astray by soothing melodies, drowned in the static noise of furious machines, gently carried along the streams of unknown waveforms, confused by contradictions. But you're never completely lost; there are familiar landmarks as well. They may not look exactly like they used to, but enough to guarantee safe navigation. The intriguingly diverse and multi-layered offering that is Modern Ruin is much due to that founding members Eskil Simonsson and Joakim Montelius were joined by the singularly talented Daniel Myer (haujobb, Architect, Destroid and on and on and on...) to replace Clas Nachmanson. The new Covenant is the synergy of three of the greatest audio alchemists this scene has ever produced, and then some! The 2 CD Limited Edition features four versions of "Wir sind die Nacht" as well as three sample tracks!

    Covenant returns

I have been a Covenant fan for quite some time (along with all the other offerings by Metropolis). I was excited to see a new offering of tracks from them and put in my pre-order. I will not say that I am disappointed in the new album, but I cannot gush about how great it is either. Don't get me wrong, this IS a good album and perhaps with additional listening sessions it will grow on me more. However, I don't think that it compares with some of their previous efforts. It sounds to me like they are trying to branch out and extend their sound into different areas. To me, it they are not quite there yet. I understand the need to grow and change as a band, but I sure did love the old sound. I would still recommend this effort.

    About what you would expect

It's been a while since Covenant release something and this did not live up to the hype. Pretty much picks up where Skyshaper left off and that's ok but they have really gotten slower and more pop over time. Gone are the filtered distortion noises that looped in the background of their older material, which created an interesting textured backdrop to a otherwise synth pop sound. Lightbringer is the best song on this, they use a wicked bass/pad patch throughout the song and the rest are good but there seems to be an overall lack of energy throughout, like they are just going through the motions, which is strange since it's been 5 years since Skyshaper. This could also be a result of Daniel Myer (formally of Haujobb - which frankly never did anything for me) being a permanent member of the band. Who knows this could be just a kick the dust off release and their future releases will back up to 4 - 5 star range.

Just Sound Effects; Very Little Substance

I've been a HUGE Covenant fan for the last five albums, but with this one they have fallen from great heights. Of course, all albums have some major hits and a few misses, but this one is mostly misses IMO.I put off buying this album since it came out because I heard a few track on YouTube and was so un-impressed. I finally bought it hoping that maybe listening to the album in its entirety, it would make sense. It doesn't.Lightbringer could be a good song, but it's far too poppy for my taste. Beat the Noise has a great beat, but the lyrics are repetitive and boring. Judge of My Domain is a great song. That's the only one off of this album I have any desire to listen to.If you like "soundscapes" and artsy music and the like, you will enjoy this album. I like profound lyrics, moving beats and music with a purpose, so I didn't care for this album one bit.
