There are 3 main bases for stains and finishes. Water/latex, alcohol, and oil-based. If you are using oil-based stain and finish, then this is perfect. This is actually the solvent in most oil-based stains and finishes but it's compatible with it as a cleaner and thinner. It's not great for water based but it's not going to do harm unless it gets on the bare wood, you need to let it dry if that happens. And for alcohol-based (eg Shellac), it's about the same. Again, not harmful unless it gets sealed under the finish. Shellac uses alcohol as a solvent and thinner. I'm a professional woodworker and since this is a rather basic question, here's abit of advice: don't just stain the cabinets, you need a finish of a compatible type. Don't mix water-based with either of the others. I'd recommend some oil-based stain you like and then finish with a satin Shellac. It's really forgiving. Just be aware that most pre-mixed shellac in the can is waxed.
