It was simply a lever to insert into a lug in the upper attachment ring. The instructions didn't explain what the snap ring was for either. It's a ring that snaps in place after the part with the 3 screws is slid onto the sink waste outlet cylinder to give that screw item something to react against when you tighten the screws to make the waste seal. It's difficult relocating that snap ring with only two hands. I used some big blobs of 'blutack' to hold the screw ring up in place temporarily so I could use two hands to fit the snap ring below it. The unit's heavy so you need to support it underneath while fitting.
