The crystals are placed in a perforated cup at the top of another cup, so that liquid is trapped in the bottom of the container. I have not tried to use this in freezing conditions, but it seems to me that the crystals and also the liquid in the bottom cup would freeze as well. I doubt this product would work as expected.
