The pen holder is open at the bottom which makes the pen easier to insert, but might allow slimmer pens and/or those with no clips to slip through. I have the holder on the front cover, but this does mean that the strap on the inside affects how I can write on the reverse of each page (at least at the front of the journal). I am thinking of inserting a sheet of stiff card at the front to reduce the effect of the ridge caused by the strap.
