For accurate VTF measurement, the stylus tip should be measured at the same vertical position as the record surface - that is, at "record level". Both color (silver and graphite )VTF gauges are identical in terms of build quality and circuit. James at Riverstone Audio **Q: Does it make the most sense to calibrate the scale on the platter (assuming it's level) since that's where you'll be using it?** A: I just used the scale yesterday for a new cartridge. Since it comes precalibrated, all you need to do is place it on the turntable platter and gently lower the stylus to the arm of the scale. If your turntable doesn't come with adjustable feet for leveling, you should check out a set online and also get a bubble level and square up your turntable before you do any cartridge adjustments. It's really a terrific tool -- much more accurate than the old Shure balance beam. Hope I helped you! **Q: When not in use can it be stored with the extension arm attached or must the arm be removed and stored separately?** A: I always remove the arm and put everything back in the box when storing the scale. I do not think it necessary to do this, but I don't use the scale often. I may re-check the cartridge force after 6 months or so, just to make sure nothing has changed. It's easy to reconnect the arm **Q: My guage showsconstantly decreasing weight. It used to do it when the battery was low, now it's all the time. Is it time for a new one?** A: Not sure if your question is in regards to a VTF gauge from Riverstone Audio or if it is a general question. Riverstone Audio VTF gauges require an alkaline battery. If you are using a non-rechargeable battery instead, that may be the issue (depending on the type, a rechargeable battery, for example a Ni-metal hydride battery, will have a lower nominal voltage of 1.2 V compared to a nominal voltage of 1.5 V for an alkaline battery - which can affect the VTF circuit). To check the VTF gauge (using a name-brand alkaline battery) place the 5 g or 20 g mass on the gauge - the reading should be stable and also repeatable; if not, the circuit has an issue and we will replace the VTF gauge.
