The history of LTP however, goes back nearly 40 years when Anthony Robb, owner of Wellington Tile Company started to import terracotta from Portugal and recognising the need for an ageing liquid to give the tiles an antique finish, he went home, mixed up a secret brew in his cement mixer, bottled it in 1 ltr jerry cans and branded the new sealer as LTP OLDTONE OIL. A few weeks later the cement mixer was in action again, this time concocting a clear finish sealer LTP CLEARTONE. As encaustic tiles are patterned air cured cement tiles, they are very porous..If it is for a new installation you will find these patterned cement tiles very porous. Hence for new installations ; After fixing and before grouting apply a generous coat to the surface and leave to dry overnight. This creates a good base layer to build additional coats. Apply further coats at 2 hourly intervals until the tile is fully saturated. Saturation has been achieved when an even layer of sealer is still visible on the surface after 20 minutes. Wipe up any excess and leave for a further 2 hours before grouting the joints. After grouting and when the surface is completely dry apply a final coat of LTP Mattstone making sure to cover the joints. Clean and maintain thereafter using LTP Waxwash. Its been outside now for a few year and had flaking layers. Ive removed the loose layers and cleaned it up and gave the slab, now acting as a doorstep, a number of good soakings with this stuff. Did it before the weather turned. Its brilliant. Now the rain water is not soaking into the sandstone, but initially beading on top. I coated all sides allowing it to soak in. Recommend this absolutely 100%. The colour was not affected at all, time will tell if it holds up but all in all very good.
