If anything a slight inward push on the needles and goes in. The number of needles make it easy to use. The size is convenient for use and doesn't take up much room. I keep it next to my grinder. The only alternative I considered was one reviewer’s wry suggestion to just push some sewing needles into a cork for the distribution tool.
