You can use it on either. It will work better on a machine that sits on top if you have an extension table, because there is more room for the quilt to sit with less drag, and you should be sure to tape it down so the quilt will not pull the slider. But the larger the flat surface you have the better it is, because there is less pull on the stitches from your quilt. **Q: How thick is the material? The needle plate sticks up about 1/8" above the bed and the ruler base. My longarm is on a 12' frame, not a sit-down type.** A: The LaPierre Studio Free Motion Supreme Slider is .020" thick. My machine is a Janome 1600P-QC. The feed dogs don't drop on this model. I have a plate which is thicker than the normal plate and is .075" above the machine bed. My machine is not on a long frame, it is in a cabinet and I free motion move the quilt and a template. I have purchased (from HomeDepot) a 3/32" sheet of plexiglass and cut an opening the shape of the needle plate then place the slider on that. If I have trouble with the plexiglass moving then I'll use double sticky tape. Maybe this will help. **Q: Wasn't this mat originally designed to be used on machines that didn't drop their feed dogs?** A: No. It was designed to make free-motion quilting smoother sliding. If feed dogs are not dropped, it defeats the purpose of having the slider with the hole in the center. Cover feed dogs with cardboard or other surface if you want to disengage them by not dropping. Quoting instructions from the original slider: "The original pure Teflon® top allows fabric to slide easily with zero friction. The pink tacky back 'clings' and is easy to remove. Just three easy steps to successful machine quilting: 1. Attach the free-motion foot. 2. Lower the feed dogs. 3. It makes free hand quilting and embroidery so much easier. Quilting not so much because this size slider is only A4 size and not really big enough, but I'm doing a lot of free hand embroidery on smaller felted pieces, the fabric slides back and forth so much easier. The only disappointing thing is the high price, I can't understand why it has to be so expensive, I had to deliberate a long time before I decided to buy it, but on the whole I'm glad I did.
