Teh one in question is light activated **Q: Is there any way to describe or quantify how much light is needed to set it off?** A: Just normal room light activates the music. I even put black Venetian lace over mine. I used a small book box for my music box. As soon as it opens, beautiful clear music plays. Wonderful item! **Q: How can you record with voice if you have to plug it into a device? You can't talk into this without a device?** A: Please record your voice into your device FIRST. Then, you just follow the steps to transfer recorded personal voice to the device. The reason, you do not record your voice to the box directly, but record to your device first is to have much better sound quality by utilizing recording features of advanced/expensive device like iPhone, PC, MAC, etc. The sound modules/boxes that you can record your voice directly will not give you good sound quality. **Q: Do you have a voice box that will go off if someone walks in front of it?** A: It depends. . . it is light activated. Some other person put it in the bathroom of a special needs child, so when they turned on the light at nights, it would give a message (Like "Don't forget to flush" etc). So it must detect a change in lighting to sound off, so if someone walks in away from the module, it probably won't work. I placed mine in inside a box, so that when the box opened, it activated it. If you close the box in the middle of message, it will shut off.
