There are a few sample slides, so we bought a pack containing loads (which was quite pricey, but ultimately worth it when we watched the kids checking out all the different things under the microscope).. we were then on the hunt for other things to try.. so we pulled out some hair.. and popped on some grains of sugar (pictured). It's been good to leave it around for the kids to come back to. The High magnification is pretty useless, but Low and Medium are good.. and reasonably easy for a 5yr old and 8yr old to get into focus (and generally, when an adult sets it, it's correct for nearly all the slides). The LED is very bright.. we use it with sunlight most of the time. I didn't find it flimsy at all and thought the top light an excellent idea.
