The "bible" of trail maps for Acadia is the MapAdventures map, but this product exceeds it in some ways. It is lighter and slightly smaller, yet waterproof as far as I know. Although smaller, this map includes trails of Schoodic Point and Isle au Haut, areas lacking in the larger, heavier map. Because it is smaller it is less detailed. For example, it uses 100' contours instead of 20' contours, not very useful for judging the slope of a trail or carriage road. It also lacks any indication of the distance between intersections on the winding carriage roads, making it difficult to plan a ride. The Island Explorer follows routes which are numbered.. There are large numbers on this map other than those for state highways or distances or elevations, but they are not numbers for Island Explorer routes. In order to know what the numbers are describing, the map must be accompanied by a copy of AMC's book about Acadia National Park.

This map is light and pliable, so it fits easily in your pack or pocket.  It is also nontear, which is another advantage.  It is not nearly as big, and thus not as easy to read, as the 3rd edition of the Jill o'keefe map, which is my favorite based upon years of use.  "A Walk in the Park", although out of print and somewhat dated now, is also a favorite as the trail descriptions are spot on.  Between the two, you can make nearly endless loop hikes through the park, the number of which are increased if you park your vehicle strategically and use the park bus system.  I picked up this map before our most recent trip to Acadia, but left it for the next folks in our rental home.  Not bad, there is just a better map.

Great laminated map to go with the AMC's Outdoor Adventures:  Acadia National Park: Your Guide to the Best Hiking, Biking, and Paddling.  This map is included with the guide but it is not laminated.  I recommend buying this map because it is laminated.  The map and the guide book are excellent and easy to use. I highly recommend purchasing both to get the most out of your trip to Acadia National Park.
