They hold onto a cell phone so tightly that you cannot remove the phone to use it without difficulty. But the pad did completely save my son's cell phone. He was spooked by a spider and dropped the phone down a ten foot deep pipe, 3" diameter, that ended well below ground level. It was far too deep and narrow for any type of clasping device, and the pipe could not be cut into, but one of these sticky pads wired to the end of a long piece of conduit did a fantastic job of retrieving that phone. And all I had to do was wash the sticky pad in soap and water and it was good as new.
