I tried it out with boiling water and it worked, but does take a bit of time. I also bought the bags you put the food packet and the heater in together so no cleaning pans. I bought the smaller pan as well. I have purchased freeze dried meals to go along with it. But would use refrigerator items first. I have had MRE meals with heaters in the past. I think this will give more flexibility in cooking or reheatiing foods. The heat pouch heats up immediately when it touches the water. The tool to pick up the pot is very important so you don't burn your self. I have used it only once so far, to test it out, and it warmed up (piping hot, I might add) a large can of a complete meal which two of us then consumed. I will soon do a dehydrated meal bag just for practice.Cleanup was a cinch and it is now ready to go for the next time.
