They turned out good they seem all the same size. Yes, they have an smell obv that's from the stain that went away pretty quickly. I used them to spell out the first names of my family (crossword style) on the wall in my family room. The varnish used to seal the wood is quite strong. I did not hang them or store them in the house for three weeks following their arrival (which was quite fast) because of the fumes. I unpacked them and laid them flat on a shelf in the garage for three weeks.
