There was no way of attaching a longer pull chain. Replacing the switch was simply a matter of cutting the cable on the old switch and connecting the cables on the new switch, using the wire nuts that were provided with the switch. Match 1 to 1, 2 to 2, 3 to 3, and L to L, regardless of the wire color or position (the order on my old switch was 12L3, whereas the new one was 123L).
