One end of the joint is spring loaded. The clamp is secured best when affixed to a cylinder like a pole. The clamp will work on flat surface like a table, however, the grip is not as secure, and not trustworthy when used with heavier items. An included adapter for flat surfaces would have been nice. Tested with a 2.2 pound golf umbrella. The clamp does require some hand strength to tighten the articulation knob when used with heavier items.
