This was made before the, horribly constructed, sample clearance process became 100% mandatory in releasing commercial music. It was, unfortunately due to that and Tommy Boy (record label), that you may never hear the album. It is not available to stream or download, was never reprinted, and plans for re-release have effectively been halted as of 2019. (nitty gritty starts here) 3 Feet High and Rising is the happiest and weirdest Hip-Hop has ever been without making sacrifices. Featuring production by Prince Paul, utilizing around 60 samples from every nook that had a cranny (and then one from its granny), the sheer number of samples means another album like this will never happen again (but we can dream). Some songs sound a bit dated production-wise, but if you like any Hip-Hop from the 80s, you’ll be right at home. De La Soul’s three emcees: Pos, Trugoy, and Maseo, are as off the wall as the music. Both lyrically and sonically, the album is casual and loaded with eccentric personality. No gangsta-rap or mumbling here either; instead, the trio allows themselves to flex their rapping skills in any way they choose, often using wildly imaginative imagery or concepts. Even the skits are entertaining. One thing to stress before closing, this is not a non-sensical album.
