There are 6 theories/concepts about teaching/learning. I highly recommend students like me who are struggling through certain subjects to read this book. To be frank, teachers, educators, students, and parents shall spend some time reading this book to understand the latest trend/the better mindset in teaching/learning. As a student based in Taiwan, I struggle a lot with math. With this book, I learn that it's quite vital for students to struggle and make mistakes. Our brains respond to mistakes with positive outcomes. Since this book is written in a coherent, accessible language, it is remarkably perfect for students to understand 6 concepts. In fact, I went through the Mandarin version first and I was like, this is a gem! Hence, I went on to purchase the English version and spent around 4-5 months reading this. This is a classic in education fields. Highly recommended for anyone who needs to learn any subjects. The explanations and the examples listed after each core message are simply the most important reason to buy the book. People can easily understand the 6 core messages. That is why I bought the book. But that is not why I am writing this review. As I was reading this book I just kept saying to myself ‘every parent needs to know this.’ I swear I was hi-fiving Jo Boaler on every page! The way she explains how we learn, the difference one person can make in a child’s life, the research she has backing every idea, and the overall way she combines knowledge and life is expressed on these pages. I have already shared this book with my teacher friends.. who have gone on to share it with their principals. But this is not a book that is just for teachers. There is way too much valuable information in here. This is a book that every parent must read. If more people understood what the connection is between a child’s mind and who and how they are perceived then the world would be a much better place and we would be creating a generation of limitless thinking kids. We’ve got to give these kids a fighting chance to be the best they can be and this book will show you how you can do that. It is now my go to ‘pregnancy gift’. Sure.. they look at me rather weird when they find out it is about math.. but after they start reading it they understand how much they and their child can benefit from the words in this book. Well done Jo! ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ A paradigm shifting perspective on making mistakes and the true potential of everyone of us *by I***A on June 30, 2021* Although to me the concept of a mistake, error or failure has been very similar to what is stated in this book since early in my childhood, the paradigm shift for me was realizing that not everyone has the same way to see these concepts as I do, which explains a lot of my confusion when I see other people’s reaction to making mistakes or to tackling problems which is very different than my own. The book starts off by introducing us to a very common phobia that apparently half of the population has regarding mathematics. Even do I constantly get the answer from people that they chose their career path because it was the furthest away from math they could get (which always sounded crazy to me as a reason for such a life decision) I didn’t consider the fact that this could be a well documented human issue which apparently it is. The book goes on to explain that everyone of us is capable of learning anything we want to and how the idea that we are limited by our genetics, cultural background, ethnicity, sex, gender or “mental capacity” is nothing but an illusion forced onto people since childhood. In general I very much like the format of the book as well as the way the content was presented, with a good mixture of quoted research work to back up strong statements and the science behind neuroplasticity, but also including person anecdotes by people who applied these concepts to their life and the impact it made as well as the results of their effort. I do have to say that sometimes the book becomes repetitive in the effort that the author is making to convey the importance of changing the way people think about mistakes and learning capacity which is appreciated but when you hear the same arguments over and over they tend to lose their strength and feel kind of preachy.
