Just do a slow, steady draw per side at course and then fine grit.You can purchase replacement wheels if yours stops doing the job, but it would likely take a very long time before you need them.My one gripe is that it was shipped in an Amazon bag that leaked. Water got in big time. The cardboard box was soaked. The manual was soaked. An absolute mess. But the sharpener had been shrinkwrapped and was fine. The charger was also not impacted. At that time, I'd purchased a ceramic knife from Walmart with a white blade for about $10-12 and saw after extensive use that it was becoming dull. After the usual scouring of reviews here and elsewhere, I decided to give a sharpener a try rather than buying a new knife. The results I got with that Walmart ceramic knife were..."Less than positive," let's say. In fact, the knife ended up with a quarter-inch chip on it after using this sharpener, and since I was past the return date, I simply packed it up in its box and forgot about it for the next three years.About a year ago, I bought a pair of ceramic knives from Big Lots, these with a black ceramic blade. The smaller knife that I use daily became noticeably dull about a month or two ago, unable to even slice a Roma tomato. Again, I thought about buying another knife, but this time, remembered the sharpener I'd bought and went looking for it. Thank goodness I didn't toss it out or leave it packed in a box. After about 20-30 seconds of sharpening, I tried cutting a tomato that was just barely getting a few wrinkles sitting on the kitchen counter, and lo and behold, my ceramic knife sliced through that thing like butta'h! I wish I'd taken photos or a video of the before and after slicing. Next time I need to sharpen the ceramic knives (maybe next year ;) I'll be sure to record a clip to show how much of a difference this sharpener actually made in reviving my knife.I am SOOOO happy that I don't have to buy another ceramic knife, and wonder if maybe the quality of your knife dictates the effectiveness of sharpening it?
