You could certainly screw this in by hand after drilling the pilot hole as well, but it is very convenient to have an impact driver to speed things up. That's it. I ordered a second one for the front door. When not in use it is inconspicuous. Guests are not likely to see much of interest. And when in use it's bedtime. Fantastic! The room has a medium-strength french door (two doors together, with no brace or wall between them), and its appearance seems to invite a bad guy to break it down. So we got a NightLock. The device installed easily. We used the screws that came with it, and the installation was easy, with our 3/4-inch hardwood floor. When we attempt to open the door from outside, there is a little slack at first. Then the door encounters an immovable object at its bottom (the NightLock). I ain't gonna be able to kick this door in. Even if I break the doors' glass, now what? It's strong glass, and I am not going to be able to penetrate before the owner has time to read America's Second Amendment to me. Our peace of mind has gone way up. I like that we can slide the slide with our foot, and we never have to bend over. The slide never comes out of the base, because we inserted a tiny stopping screw most of the way down into the 3/4" hardwood floor, forming an almost invisible stopper on each side. It's no where near snug/close to my door.** A: Hi, Leigh Godbey here from Nightlock Security, the only authorized Distributor of Nightlock on Amazon, and I can probably help you resolve this issue. There are several potential solutions, depending on how much space there is between the door and the sliding backing plate. For example, if you have a 1/2" gap, getting a piece of stock aluminum (or even a piece of wood) 3/8" to 7/16" thick and, using "liquid nail" to apply it to the backing plate, this will solve the gap issue. Or, you can contact me, through Amazon, and I can probably supply you with the piece of aluminum stock from our steel company! Hope this helps! **Q: How thick/high is the floor plate? I'm concerned with tripping on it.** A: Product description says: Base plate height of 7/16" Requires at least a 1/2" clearance between bottom of door and the floor **Q: Do you have to use the plate under the floor?** A: The base plate mounts on top of the floor. The mounting screws should be long enough to penetrate the subfloor. Extra support under the subfloor can be achieved by securing a 2x6 board to the underside of the subfloor (if access to this area is possible). **Q: I have all laminate wood flooring in my basement. Will the screws go deep enough to anchor into it?** A: Great question. Have a helper lay 2x6 under the plate in the basement. Wood glue 2x6 if possible. It won't go anywhere no matter how hard it gets kicked. No go protect your property. Oh you may want to sand the laminate too. Good luck to you. Oh, sorry I forgot screws are 3" long. (Works great.) ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ VERY SOLID AND TUFF ! *by J***A on October 7, 2012* After reviewing various types of residential door blocks, I decided to purchase Nightlocks for my home's 4 exterior doors. Thru my research, I found that items like "dead-bolt" locks on doors can be picked or easily kicked-in due to weak door jam wood that the dead-bolt goes into. I wanted to install something on the (inside) of the door that crooks and home-invaders could not access from the outside and that would keep the door from opening at all. When I recieved my nightlocks, made of extruded structural aluminum, it was evident that these floor-mounted door blocks are built tuff. They are easy to install on the floor and very easy to slide out and back in. They also look attractive and are not noticeable much. I feel better about having these on all 4 of my doors. I would propose that it would take a whole lot of kicks from the outside of the door before these devices would let-go. They truely are tuff and sturdy and give a much needed security enhancement to any door, especially at night when I am asleep. Again, a good kick can compromise a dead-bolt. I dont think it will compromise a nightlock.
