Review: Great quality. Works as expected! - I used this in an inverter that had a variable speed fan. I upgraded the fan and I wanted to run at full speed no matter what the voltage. This module supplies 12 volts to the output after the input is at 5 volts or higher. The output is rock steady at 12 volts. Perfect for a flicking light condition. Drok makes great products.
Review: Good for the cost... - Seems good for the cost - I'm using a couple of these as "float chargers" for sealed lead acid batteries (ham radio portable gear). They do a nice job of taking "whatever" input -- I've tried as low as 5V from a USB phone charger or as high as 22V from an unregulated solar panel and it does an excellent job of charging at 1.5A (current limited) up until it trails off as it peaks at 13.9V (voltage setpoint) very nicely charging my batteries without hurting anything. I had to use trial and error to adjust the voltage and current...the shorter POT with a "+" head is the current, start by tweaking to find the min/max then center it between those positions. Then hook up a volt meter and dial the tall POT (slotted screw head) until you find your desired voltage. Finally put a high current ammeter on the output (shorting it out) and dial the shorter POT until you get the max current you want it to pass. Unhook that and switch back to a volt meter verify the output is still good and you're done. Note that under high load when it hits the max current the output voltage will sag down, that is normal but something you may need to plan for...e.g. if your cooling fan needs 10V to start and you try to charge a battery that drags output down to 9V it may not run your fan. I would suggest planning to build a cooling fan into whatever you use this in, even at 1.5A it gets rather hot for my like without any cooling, though even minimal air flow does wonders (small PC fan works nicely). As others said, the heat sink is barely attached, one of the two I got the heatsink was already broken off so I had to use some thermal epoxy (like CPU heat sink paste, but 2-part epoxy glue that hardens) to re-attach it. All things considered, this seems a very good deal for low-current DIY projects.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: How well will this power a raspberry pi 3?**
A: This is not the best choice for raspberry pi 3. Raspberry pi 3 requires 5v. This regulator is intended to boost input voltage. For example you can input 12v and output 24v. A better solution for raspi 3 if you need a regulator for say battery operation the use a step down that is set for 5v output. If you are not using a battery and are using AC wall outlet then a standard wall wart that supplies USB power works great. USB power is 5v.

**Q: I would like to use this for a project with a 0-30v input and a 5v, 2a output. is there a way to set the current? potential problems w/ the values?**
A: If you look carefully at the image of the circuit board, you can see the two adjustable pots. The tall rectangular one adjusts the output voltage while the short square one is the current controlling one. My objection to this device is the current control pot. With less than one turn of the screw, you cover the entire range of control. Other similar boards have ten turn pots for both controls. When I just checked, for a couple of bucks more, you can get an similar board with two ten turn pots and a display showing the output current and voltage.

**Q: How do I make this a 12v flood battery trickle charger running from 12 Solar batteries?**
A: solar panels? I use a charge controler not the boost/buck converters. They have built in regulation and charge control and can also boost low or buck high panel outputs.. There are 5 and 10 amp units available for reasonable cost. Also there are 25 to 50 amp units that cost much more.

**Q: Can I connect these parallel**
A: The general answer is NO because it's impossible to set the output voltage of two of these to exactly the same voltage. Even 0.001V difference will cause the one with the higher voltage to supply all of the current, up to it's maximum output. If the current draw lowers the output voltage, something it shouldn't do, then the second one will start supplying some of the power..

That said, there is a way to use two (or more) of them in parallel. The trick is to place an identical small value resistor in series with each of the outputs with the load connected to both resistors. Now, when more current is drawn from one power supply, the voltage drop across the series resistor for that supply will decrease the output voltage after the resistor allowing the output voltages to match. You'll also want to match the output voltages as closely as possible, measured before the resistors. I'd recommend using a meter with three digits after the decimal at the output voltage. I'd also recommend using 1% resistors, in the 0.01 to 0.1 ohm value range. Don't forget that you will need to get resistors with enough power dissipation to prevent them overheating. If your load presents a varying current draw, the series resistors will also cause a small variance in the device's supply voltage, measured at the device.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Good product. No manual but...
*by A***R on March 10, 2018*

A good DC-DC converter and is so far working for my purposes. No user manual though. It's a simple product, but I'd really have appreciated a simple instruction manual and/or diagram; it'd just make me (and I'm sure a lot of entry-level users) feel better. EDIT: I was able to obtain a brief un-proofed manual for this, explaining the functions of the two potentiometers ('screws') on the board, and the LED indicators. I've uploaded it for everyone here: http://rnaservices.net/public/manuals/solar/DIY/DATASHEET_200234_boostbuck_manual.pdf
