He's guided my studies on Japanese military history for the last two decades and I own more books written by Mr. Turnbull on the subject--warfare, weaponry and even lore and Japanese philosophy--than any other author by far. His knowledge of the Japanese is vast, his love for the people and culture obvious and his writing style is at once engaging and entertaining.What Turnbull brings to the table with this small volume is a brief look at perhaps Japan's most iconic object: nihonto--or the Japanese sword--in all its forms. This is a small book, to be sure--don't look for an in-depth study of the subject here (Turnbull has a large number of other books if you want to delve into much greater depth and detail)--but what you will find here here instead is a concise, synoptic overview of the Japanese sword and its use in and impact on Japan for over a millennium. The fact that it is an Osprey publication also means the quality of photos, renderings and overall quality are excellent.Katana: The Samurai Sword begins with the development and history of the Japanese sword and explores some of the factors that influenced its design and use throughout Japan's often violent past, including a brief exploration of nomenclature and a look into how the sword is actually made. It goes on to document the use of the sword by some of Japanese history's most important, and often colorful characters, and its impact on both military and social elements of Japanese history, including the sword's actual use by samurai and others. The book also delves into the reasons behind the Japanese sword's powerful iconic value in Japanese culture.I own quite a library of Osprey books and despite their small size they are packed with information and graphics of the highest quality. Osprey's new "Weapon" series of titles--of which this book is an example--doesn't fail to satisfy and it does exactly what one would expect of the entire Osprey collection of books: it provides a brief, concise but relatively detailed look at one of histories most revered and iconic weapons.
