Learning one game might take 30-60 minutes to figure out. I have a sixth grade boy I tutor who is probably working at an early fourth grade level and we take on one or two games each week. It's fun to watch him verbally reason through the directions! He analyzes what skills are required for the game and estimates the youngest grade level the game would be suitable for. The book provides all of that information, but I don't tell him! This year I'm in charge of Family Math Night at my school and my theme is "Game On". I'm going to feature games (obviously), one section will be games kids and parents can play together with just some dice or a deck of cards. So far I've figured out out how to play 8 of the games featured in this book and I am going to use all of them for my event. I hope to have 15 dice/card games in all. I had my 6th grade students test all the games I have learned so far; watching them play and hearing the math talk around the room made me wish one of my administrators would walk in and see the mathematical harmony! In addition to the many games featured in this book, each game has recommended variations so it can be played by early elementary to adults. I've also used the activities as 10 minute in-services for classroom teachers to share with them meaningful activities to take back to their classrooms. The book has lessons to introduce the activities that later become independent or small group activities in station/centers. The lessons share rational, misconceptions and examples of how to differentiate the activity. (make sure you down load the black line masters on line, for free, as noted on the bottom of any master's page.) Many of the pages can be copied and laminated to be used over and over. I have only used 10 of 33 games so far.Students LOVE the games; laughing during math class is usually a foreign sound but not during "Salute!" an addition or multiplication fact game, or "Build Ten" or "Anything But Ten". Laughter is a sweet sound to a math teacher.
