Push down and turn to the right to tighten and then ignite! I use this to melt cheese on a dish or start a pellet tube for smoking meats. Works very very well. The only downside is that if you want to turn it off, you have to turn the dial all the way left but there's no "click" to let you know it's fully closed. Makes me a little uneasy since it can very easily turn back on and let gas escape. The biggest drawback of this is, it does not work as mentioned in the listing. It says it works when pointed downwards or inverted. NO! this thing spits out fire like a flame thrower when inverted and the flame will not retain its shape. and hence dangerous to use for kitchen purpose.
