I have a beautuful design that would look great on the black and go wonderful with a bass sound. Thank you** A: I asked this question myself -- and was told by West Music's Alex Adams (one of the folks who made the YouTube video on Remo drums) that the skin of the Buffalo drum is not absorptive, it's a bit like naugahyde vinyl. That quality plus being constantly beat means that it would be very difficult for any paint to last. I did not ask about painting the sides, however, and they are covered with a fairly rough burlap feeling material. That may have potential. . . . **Q: What is your experience with the mallet that comes with this drum? Any advice on choosing an alternative?** A: Sometimes I can hit pretty hard and the mallet that comes with this drum would scratch the drum face. I highly recommend throwing away the included mallet and invest in a felt or yarn mallet around $25-30 (comes in pack of 2). I couldn't be happier with this drum. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Excellent choice. *by C***R on August 6, 2025* Not my first hand drum, nor first Remo. This is a deeper tone drum and was given as a gift to a friend. Not an easy decision as I love this drum. My first Remo has higher tones, and I prefer it over the Elk Skin drum made years ago. Never have to worry about head drying out, or changes in temperatures. The beater is fine and fits well in a mans hand though can be modified for a womans. Fits in the 16" case and on airplanes. Do have to tighten the rope after a years' use.
