My dog does not take the heat well. I put the collar on her on a hot day when she had already been outside in the yard for a while. After a few minutes she seemed more comfortable and was panting less. I did not find the ice messy since it was quickly absorbed by her thick fur.I was a little surprised by how narrow the pocket is which holds the ice. My dog loves it - when she hears it snap closed, she licks my face! Reasonable price for quality item. I do not use ice, as I think it would be messy. It is neat and easy to use "as is."
