This arrangement partially represents a chronological evolution of solutions to the task, and also parallel solutions independently arrived at or specifically aimed at a niche; but it is largely up to you to imagine this as it is only a thin book covering a lot of mechanisms, and to pontificate about each would make it run to many volumes. The illustrations and descriptions are a very concise top-level overview - just enough to let you know that "this is a thing", and if you look and read and understand you can begin to animate them in your mind and maybe even hear the sounds they make!
