I was concerned it might not be safe for a child who just turned 3 but I think it is perfect for children three and older. The ends of the spines have large round balls so he can't hurt/poke himself or someone else and the opening and closing mechanism seems to be completely "pinch proof." There are several different styles and colors but he is fascinated with fire engines and firemen so this is perfect!

I bought this umbrella for my darling 2 1/2 year old friend because he very reluctantly relinquished his Daddy’s umbrella. The child loves the umbrella so much he wants to use it always, even when not raining. It is almost a problem. Of course, he loves the fire trucks, he loves all trucks and construction vehicles. As to sturdiness - who knows? Is anything toddler-proof? We just got it a week ago. But it looks like the photo and is toddler size.
