The plates are parallel at 3/4". **Q: Is the product made in USA?** A: Nope, Taiwan. The packaging clearly shows this, and the country or origin is a lie. Irwin sold out the Vise-Grip brand in 2008 and moved all production to East Asia. The quality is terrible now. If you want a quality tool I'd recommend Channellock (USA) or Knipex (Germany). **Q: Do these close flat? It looks like just the front edge touches the sheet metal.** A: No they don't close flat. Buy the bigger longer one ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Does a good job *by P***N on 26 December 2015* Well made, as you'd expect from Irwin, and clamps tight and square just as the manufacturer claims. This is the 8 inch version which was fine for the job I used it for - bending thin sheet steel - as I could get sufficient leverage on it; if you are intending to bend anything more substantial you will need something larger.
