First before you use this ; increase the heat just enough to melt solder on the tip, then wipe it off. Do this several times to tin the tip. When you solder just turn the heat up high enough to melt the solder, then heat the wire before applying solder. I like this because heat can be very controlled. No cord to drag around and portable.
