It comes with a #4 steel screw to pre tap the holes. All I did was drill a pilot hole with a 5/64 vex bit (vex bits are the only way to go), waxed the steel screw (actually I used chap stick), gently threaded the steel screw in, backed it out and then screwed in the brass screw (with wax of course). Went in like I was installing them in warm butter. These babies are the cat's meow. Look awesome and work perfectly. By the way, the jewelry box was made of wenge and curly maple. The hinges went in the curly maple part (in case you were wondering the type of wood I was dealing with). They are a little expensive, but the box was for my woman and this was no time to be counting pennies. After 22 years living with my idiosyncrasies she earned it (and 10x more). Buy them.
