Is it solid?** A: Not sure if coated. It does not feel like raw wood. It feels very nice and I really really like the set. Does the job very well for me. I enjoy using wooden spoons. I even put them in the dishwasher so they don't retain germs. **Q: I've had mine for a while and they look rather grungy. Any ideas for cleaning them up a bit?** A: Try salt and lemon juice - rubbing with the lemon. It seems to work on cutting boards. This is my second set, I’ve had my first set for many years and they’ve held up very well. Love that they are dishwasher safe. That is why these are the only ‘wooden’ spoons I use. I bought a 2nd set here because I wanted one of them for a dedicated cold brew spoon. I make large batches every week and the tallest spoon fits will with my brew container and my gallon pitchers.
