Jacquard's Procion MX fiber reactive dye powder is best used as fabric dye for cotton, linen, hemp, rayon, viscose and bamboo - any natural, plant-based fibers. Before application, your fabric needs to be soaked in a solution of one cup of soda ash to one gallon of water for about 20 minutes. This makes the clothing dye permanent. You can also add the soda ash to the tie dye dye solution for immersion dyeing. To apply with a bottle, use a ratio of one cup tap water to 2 teaspoons of dye. For immersion dyeing, to achieve a medium color, use 1 tablespoon dye, 1 ½ cups salt, and ¼ cup of soda ash. Ratios can be adjusted to create pastels or deep, rich colors, and the tie dye colors can be mixed to create the perfect shade for your project! The dye powder goes a long way, as one 2/3oz jar will dye approximately 1lb of dry fabric. Can you tell me what other products I might need to buy?** A: Tracy. If you plan on vat dying look into getting the big bottles of powdered dye either from Jacquard direct or from Dharma trading. These little bottles are only meant to make 2 cups of dye at the correct concentration. Yes you should prewash with a good detergent like syntropol or Dharmas pro detergent. Then soak your rugs in a solution of 1 c soda ash per gallon of water (can use super washing soda, it's the same thing and cheaper) If you have hard water you may need a water softener like Calgon. If you are using dark colors you'll need pickling salt and urea to make your dye solution. The darker the color the more Salt. Gloves are a given.... but I suggest drop clothes and a good vinyl apron (cut one from an old felt backed plastic table cloth) Remember these dyes require a 24 hours processing time after you've dyed your item. put them in garbage bags and set them somewhere warm. Then you can rinse and wash. **Q: Can you use this to dye water to shoot out of a fire truck for a gender reveal?** A: Oh no, no, no......not unless you want permanent blue (or pink) spots on any fabric it touches. Look for a food quality vegetable dye - check bakery suppliers. **Q: does this come with soda ash or do I need to buy it separately?** A: Buy washing soda from Arm & Hammer (it is soda ash) or cook some baking soda as the other answer says. **Q: Will this dye polyester fabrics??** A: No. It has to be a 100% organic material - cotton, silk, wool. When I've died items with polyester stiching, it remains white as the rest of the material dyes the color. Also, this product has to be used with a soda ash soak, which helps the dye to adhere/bond to the fabric better.
