Manufacturer assumes that the installation of the gutter adapter is replacing downspout outlet and does not provide any dimensions or installation instructions related to modifying a gutter for installing the gutter adapter. Our installation of a rain chain was a new outlet in a 5" steel gutter. For installing in a 5in gutter the provided base plate needs 1/4" of flange remove to sit flush. A 2" bimetal hole saw is required to cut the proper diameter thru hole in the gutter. Not only using sealant calk, but I also recommend adding 4, 1/8" dia x 1/4"L rivets to secure the adapter base plate then sealing the rivets. The combined weight of the adapter assembly and 8 1/2' chain is not excessive. If installing greater than 48" away the nearest gutter hanger an additional hanger should be installed adjacent to the desired outlet location for supporting the gutter.
