    Somehow, an Escape

*by C***I on Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on May 26, 2020*

Let’s put any controversy aside at the beginning of my review and concentrate on the story. I’ll get to the controversy later. I’m not going to sugarcoat the fact that I was dead set against reading any type of pandemic book for anywhere in the near future. Then a favorite author of mine (Kylie Scott) introduced this story and I actually wanted to read the book after reading the blurb. There is a brief moment, when this story first starts, that I’m not so sure about Evan. Thankfully, he quickly won me over and I was rooting for him and Sadie to make a connection. Which, of course, they did. And it was very sweet and even got to be sexy, the whole time them never getting within 6 feet of each other. Their dialogue, their emotions, their little acts of kindness for one another, that’s what drove this story. Yet I still could feel their heat and their yearning. At the same time, I wasn’t focused on my own quarantine situation, which had been one of my main fears in reading a quarantine story. Now, I can see how there are many people who would possibly need a trigger warning with this story. I’ve been lucky and nobody very close to me has gotten sick. While the authors don’t gloss over the seriousness of these trying times, they also don’t delve deep into the illness because neither of the main characters get sick. But they do talk on the phone to loved ones who are sick…and worse. So, although the title is almost a trigger warning in itself, it’s best to know these things going in.As for Sadie and Evan, they are responsible and really follow the rules. Yet they are still able to find passion and friendship. They help one another to find an escape from the terror outside by creating their own little bubble of fun and love. All of my doubts as to whether a pandemic love story could be something I would want to read while in middle of pandemic went out the window. I wrapped myself in the Sadie/Evan bubble and was able to let the stress of the times melt away while I was reading. Now, I need to address the controversy. Oh, the controversy. A few weeks before it was released, I saw a post on Kylie Scott’s Instagram about this story. I don’t usually comment, but I commented on her IG to say I was leery of pandemic stories but hers sounded like an escape, which we all need right now. There was a bit of hullabaloo after this book was released so I tried to avoid that until I could read the book for myself. I will stay firmly on the side of the reviewers since a review is for the readers, not for the authors. I’m just letting you know that I am aware, to a certain extent, of what went down. I’m happy to find that Kylie Scott isn’t the one that caused the issue and has been very tactful and gracious (from what I can tell) during the uproar. I’ve never read an Audrey Carlan book before and probably never will again unless it’s another joint venture with another author I love. When this book came out and these authors, whether justly or not, felt attacked, one responded with grace and maturity and one did not. There is even a part in this story, her very own written work, about reviews and how they are for the reader and authors should stay away from them. Yes, I was a bit reticent to read a quarantine book right now. But I can make an informed decision and not read said book if I don’t like the subject matter. I’m not going to tell anyone they have no right to write such a story. I’m sure it was a very personal decision to do so. That’s my little rant and it’s now over.

THE SWEETNESS OF HALLMARK WITH NC-17 LEVEL HEAT

*by S***A on Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on July 24, 2020*

This book was just what I needed right now—a sweet steamy romance within a new trope, and a mystery as a bonus. The pandemic trope was something new and refreshing. Were it handled differently it might not have appealed to me, but this was fun and flirty with such endearing characters that I embraced all of it. From weaving social distancing rules into the story, to the wild range of emotions that we are all having— the worry, the sadness, the frustration, the loneliness. It's really unique, just like the alternate reality that we're living through right now.I don't see the pandemic as a negative in this story. It merely defines the relationship between Evan and Sadie. They have a role model relationship really. Right now we all need to talk to each other. It helps to cry together, laugh together, and communicate, which Sadie and Evan do so well. (Some of their lines are insanely funny, others are bittersweet.) And they're a team, respecting social distancing rules, problem solving, and supporting each other when tragedy strikes.Although some call this relationship insta-love that's not the way I see it. During intense shared experiences people become close and relationships are speeded up. But Sadie and Evan still had time to get to know each other because of both their proximity and their distance. They became friends first, then developed an attraction, then fell in love. Yeah, it all happened over the course of two weeks but you do see an evolution. And let's face it, two weeks is longer than it takes in far too many romance novels.Interestingly, the authors sent a message to their readers about the downsides of being a romance writer.Sprinkled throughout the story, Sadie details the harsh communications she gets from readers ("Art is subjective... I put my heart and soul into it and then set it free. People are going to like it or not. I have no control over it."). She talks about juggling writing, publicity, and managing a small business. It's a lot more than readers realize. This is a cute little story, great for lifting your spirits. A real life setting, a sweet and joyful romance, and a mystery to solve. It's all done realistically and believably. I don't think you can go wrong choosing this book for a day or two of light entertainment, and I would definitely read it again.

    A Good Quarantine

*by A***E on Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on May 20, 2020*

This was a really good read. NFL running back Evan Sparks is living in his own personal hell and to top it off the covid~19 epidemic hit and he finds himself trapped in his best friends Jake's apartment. Sadie Walsh is an erotic romance writer who is having the worse case of writers block until she gets a look at her neighbor. This was a good read that was very realistic to what's going on in the world today. Evan is in danger of losing his job as photos of him are in the news. I liked that they did the safe thing by dating by phone and FaceTime even having hot sex that way. These two had some really good chemistry and I liked that she wasn't stick thin and loved eating junk food. This book was also funny at times. This book was well written with no errors in grammar or spelling.
