Do you mean forward voltage or forward voltage drop? It looks like forward voltage would make sense to be anything under it's max blocking voltage. The .55v in the specs appears to be the max forward voltage drop.

Q: How do you tell which way the current go?

the positive power source goes to the black end (anode), the striped end (cathode) goes to the load. Juice flows from the batt + to black end of diode, then from stripe end of diode to the device being powered, then back to the batt- . The striped end will be more negative or there will be no flow. Think of it as a check valve. current flows from positive to negative -- from black end to striped end. Don't be confused by people who say that electrons flow from negative to positive-- while this is true, "conventional" current flow is described as positive to negative. Batt+ to Black end(anode), striped end(cathode) to load, to Batt-.

Q: Can I use these diodes to prevent backfeed on a 12vdc trickle charger?

Yes, no problem at all - expect 0.6 v voltage drop across diode
