As the story goes ~One night Lyman had 'a little to drink', and when they began playing Lyman let out a few bird calls.The audience started answering back with all kinds of weird cries, and bird calls became a trademark of Lyman's sound.When Denny's 1957 hit of "Quite Village ignited a national mania for all things Hawaiian,Lyman left Denny's band to create his own group which was a similar style, but more flamboyant.His for-most trademark is bird calls. Like other Exocita bands, the marimba, tambourine, cowbells,wind chimes, cocktail drums, boobams, conch shells and other exotic instruments are used to spice up arrangementsThese four C.D.'s contain 8 of Lyman's first 9 albums from 1957 to 1960, with 97 tracks, and over 4 1/2 in length.(His seventh album "Arthur Lyman on Broadway" from 1959 isn't here)During Lyman's heyday he had three songs on the pop chart, the first two are here & their B-sides.1. You could easily spend five times the money and get only half of this music, buying individual CDs - if you can find them, that is. The audio quality is very good. You don't need a precision CD transfer to reproduce all the audio content of the original recordings - these were made back in the 1950s, when stereo was 'the new hot thing.' The only downside is that you don't get the original album cover art (which was great - colorful, sensual and very Tiki-fied!) for the individual albums. ### ⭐⭐⭐ Skip this set *by P***T on Reviewed in the United States on October 28, 2014* I've always liked Arthur Lyman, so the music is 5 stars & the quality of this recording is NO STARS. I gave up after 2 tries. The CDs are hopelessly mislabeled so if you want to identify any of the music, you'd better know the tunes beforehand. The response to my complaint about the first set I received was so slow that I had to ask Amazon for help. After I received the second replacement set & realized that the labeling on that one was even worse, I just gave up & asked for a refund, also asking Amazon to help assure I would receive credit, which I did get.
