The LEDs are embedded in a plastic with gold flecks. The look is very nice. But the majority of the illumination comes through the end. Very little light is diffused through the side facing the space in which it is installed.For our bathroom, our medicine cabinets reach quite high, so the only option was to point the lights toward the ceiling for the 'bounce'/indirect light off the ceiling. Pointing them downwards would have simply illuminated the top of the cabinets while leaving the room relatively dark. The good news is that using 3 units together provides ample light.
