Initially, I had a boot disk as well as 3 more disks on ports on motherboard. The boot disk was /dev/sda and 3 more bing sdb, sdc, and sdd. In order to add another disk, I moved boot disk onto this card, then added another disk to the port on motherboard.As soon as I moved the boot drive to port 1 on this card, and booted, it came up as /dev/sde and booted all the way up. I did not even go into BIOS on this card or the motherboard. No manual change of anything on system or OS. It came right up. It could not have been easier.I have no idea on speed. Using regular disk (not SSD), it is irrelevant to me. I'm sure it's fast enough for realistic throughput from this type of card and SATA-III drives. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ This card solved the problem! *by D***R on October 12, 2020* The problem: HP Z400 desktop workstation only supports hard drives up to 1.5TB (BIOS limitation), but I needed to install a 6TB drive.I found this card, live-chatted with StarTech tech support. They said "We think this will work."They were right: IT WORKED! PERFECTLY!And as a bonus, this card is 6GB/s. (The motherboard SATA ports are only 3GB/s.) So drive throughput is MUCH faster!I'm very happy. Thank you StarTech! ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Has some issues with Linux use *by K***K on May 9, 2017* This review is on my StarTech PEXSAT32 - 2 port SATA 6Gpbs PCIe Controller.I am running Linux 4.10.13--- on a AMD Phenom II x6 1100T processor.The initial install of this card would complete the boot process, but boot error messages were generated and the drives connected to this card were inaccessible. This card uses the Marvell 88SE9128 chip and it turns out there is a history of issues in Linux using this chip with an active IOMMU. Numerous bug reports with apparent fixes, but often seem to crop up again.Getting operational:In my case turning off the IOMMU in BIOS results in error free boot and access to my attached drives. ( its possible iommu=off on the boot command line will work, but I did not test ) This card is supported with the standard Linux kernel, so no configuration is required to support individual attached disks. The raid BIOS is available on the chip, but I have not evaluated.One star off:There is no particularly useful information on the supplied CD. Very dated Linux drivers are supplied with no explanation. Do not use these drivers if you are anywhere near current on you Linux kernel.
