It's like a darker, grittier Ready Player One. Main character is sometimes hard to root for (kind of a jerk) and the characters could have developed more, but overall story pacing good . That's the basis of a prototype for new technology from Otherworld and it could open the doors to so many limited by their body constraints particularly those who are paralyzed or disabled.It all sounds wonderful and too good to be true. Well that's because it is and most of the people testing the beta don't realize they're the lab rats and some of them are dying because they're mind is tricked into thinking Otherworld is real and when injured in the game, it can have disastrous consequences.Simon is a gamer who is excited to test the new headsets from Otherworld and it's the only way he can seem to see Kat because she refuses to see him in real life. When his Dad destroys his gear because he took $6000 out of his parents' account to be able to play this new version, he decides to follow Kat around in person and try to learn why she's been acting so strange.One night he follows her to an abandoned place who is there with a group of kids and watches in horror as the first floor where everyone is but him collapses and kills two kids while injuring others including Kat who he manages to save when she starts bleeding from an injury. Following her to the hospital after someone called the ambulance, he learns that she has developed Locked In Syndrome from her accident and may never recover.Then he finds out there's a way she can live through virtual reality with a strange disc attached to the back of her skull. Simon would much rather have her back in real life and soon learns that this virtual reality could have a sinister motive behind it.Simon is in a race against the clock to find out what's really going on, trying to save Kat and when he finally manages to get his own disk, learns that sometimes the latest technology has the potential to kill you.On his journey to find Kat in Otherworld, he makes friends along the way including a guide, an ogre with a sense of humor, a knight and a soccer Mom. Meeting unexpected help along the way thanks to Kat, he's determined to get to the bottom of what's going on and trying not to get killed in world by raging buffalo, The Children (creatures born of an Elemental and another being), save Kat and find the Creator before any one else has to suffer.Full of adventure, friendship, humor (the orgy comment by the Ogre still cracks me up), the power of love and a crazy dose of virtual reality.
