Basically, I sit on a chair and starting at the top of my leg, press and roll the roller stick and when I feel a tender spot, focus rolling the rod in that area, applying pressure until the tenderness subsides. Then, roll down to just above the knee and back up the quad. I use it on my calf as well. It comes with instructions for use. You don't have to wait until you have an injury to get one, as it can be used after regular exercise.
