Review: nice book - only skimmed it so far but like what i see. the thing i always look for is a different way to do things, this book shows methods with table saw ,router, hand tools ,bandsaw . so what ever you have or use they probably is a project for you or one that is easily adapted to your tool. now i know a frame at is simplest is just good square joints, but the book still expands ideas and that is what a book should do. you know its a book with a lot of picture when you wife earmarks pages and tells you where this frame would look good. so again i rate it very good as book a instructional aid and as a marital aid
Review: For those with the skills it's a wonderful book - I rely on these reviews quite a bit, so I wanted to add my views to the discussion on American Woodworker’s book on Picture Frames. I found it to be excellent, but I have made a lot of frames already and have all the skills necessary to make the cabinetry for our new kitchen to be, a project currently in progress. Others have pointed out that this book is not for beginners, and they’re right. Some 18 years ago I wanted to get a basic book on framing and matting. This is the book I chose: “Home Book of Picture Framing” by Kenn Oberrecht. I was a cabinetmaker even then, so I mostly wanted that book for the instruction on matting. Oberrecht’s book used Alto mat cutters, which I think are no longer being made. Logan seems to be the one used these days, but the advice given on cutting mats and choosing colors and the basic process for matting is pretty much the same. I personally like the Alto mat cutter, but I never tried Logan, so I can’t really say one is superior to the other. But the main point in this is that those who want basic instruction on how to make picture frames will find it in Oberrecht’s book. He explains any number of methods for frames, starting with simply buying molding and cutting it up for frames. But for those who are more advanced woodworkers, American Woodworker has put together a wonderful book. I expect to use a number of the frames featured here. Also, for those who may not be aware of that, the router bits they use are all sold by Eagle America. desertcart has a set of five picture framing bits from Eagle that I purchased some time back and used for my own frames. They’re wonderful bits, and I recommend them. https://www.desertcart.com/Eagle-America-199-1655-Picture-Mirror/dp/B013DIKLHC/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1550589287&sr=8-1&keywords=Picture+Frame+And+Mirror+Bits++by+EAGLE

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Decent Idea Book
*by P***O on November 3, 2025*

This book is a nice idea book for frame makers. It's a bit router-centric and there is a section on router-made frame stock that shows stock cross-sections and describes how to make the cuts in order - very helpful for router-users. There is also on section on how to make a variety of helpful jigs to assist in frame-making. I have my own slightly different versions of a few of these jigs, but may modify mine and build a few more based on the guidance in this book. The book falls short on a few pretty important aspects of frame making. There is virtually no discussion on sanding, staining, or finishing frames, nor is there any guidance on gluing mitered corners or ripping and gluing corner splines, things I have found in my experience to be easier said than done easily and neatly.
